International: Japan!

Now that we've covered a location within the United States, why not expand and travel internationally?

One very famous and popular international destination would definitely be Japan. Known as a location of aesthetically appealing attractions, delicious food, and more, Japan rests in the top 3 travel destinations in the hearts of many travelers, including mine!

My first travel experience in Japan was four years ago, before the pandemic happened and prior to Japan's borders closing to halt the spread of the illness. Back then, traveling was much simpler and easier than it is today, with Japan currently not permitting tourists due to COVID-19 restrictions.

However, with that said, I can hopefully still provide some very helpful information about traveling to Japan even with the current global situation happening.

Who knows, maybe Japan will ease up its restrictions this summer for those of us travelers who are only able to travel during the summer months.

That reminds me, I traveled to Japan back in the summer of 2018, and traveling there during the summer months was no joke. Sound familiar? I think we can see an overall trend here of traveling during the peak summer months, with crowds and scorching hot temperatures exploding around the world. It's a well known tip in the travel community to avoid summer travel for a reason, though I wouldn't say you should avoid it at all costs.

Although summer crowds are unavoidable if you're traveling at this time of year, with this sort of weather, one item I can most certainly recommend bringing again is sunscreen. However, make sure you don't carry too much of it (particularly in aerosol form) as TSA airport security will likely confiscate it if brought in large enough quantities.

I can personally emphasize how scorching hot the summers are in Japan. Like most of Japan's population, we walked for most of our travels, and in the summer heat it was very uncomfortable. It was common for us to constantly be on the lookout for shade and vending machines just because of how warm it was there.

However, with traveling longer distances we commonly took the train as there were train stations all throughout Tokyo. Definitely expect to use the train systems commonly in Japan, as it is the most convenient way to travel longer distances.

Now that we've cleared traveling there, now's the time to find places to stay. Whether or not you're looking to stay in hotels or AirBnB hosts, finding places to stay in Japan shouldn't be too difficult. I personally stayed in an AirBnB in the Taito area of Tokyo, as it was right next to the buzzing Akihabara shopping hub. Typically, AirBnB hosts in this area typically charge between 20-40 USD a night, so it isn't as bad as other locations.

Once you've found a place to stay, now's the time to map out what you want to do in this beautiful country! There are so many things to do, from going to Tokyo Tower, Mount Fuji, the Meiji Shrine, or to just shopping and playing arcade games. You can never really find yourself short of things to do here, which is one of the reasons why I love traveling to Japan so much!

Meiji Shrine

While you're out experiencing the wonders that Japan has to offer along with its excellent cuisine, I would 100% recommend going to a hot spring spa if you haven't been able to experience it yet. After a very familiar exhausting day of traveling, resting and relaxing in the warm water of a hot spring is one of the best feelings in the world. And even if you aren't a very big fan of hot springs, many Japanese spas offer other things from delicious street food cooked right on the premises to peaceful outdoor areas to relax in.

The hot springs spa that my family and I went to offered a whole street food cafeteria, an arcade, and a whole peaceful outdoor area to relax in other than the hot springs. It was a perfect place for us to relax in as we had traveled to Mt. Fuji earlier in the day, and resting here in the warm water was one of my favorite parts of my time in Japan.

Some footage we took at a spa in Tokyo!

Although it isn't exactly possible to travel to Japan at the moment, I do hope that their borders open again soon so you all can experience the beauty of this wonderful travel destination!

  1. I have always wanted to go to Japan! Everyone that I've spoken to that has gone, loved it! I hear there is so much to do and see, which is not surprising because that's how I felt in the 4 countries I visited in Asia. They have a Portrait Parade in Kawasaki, Japan that looks so interesting! I'd love to visit while they had that going on. My favorite food is sushi, so that's also a big appeal to going to Japan someday. Everyone keeps telling me that the sushi there is next level compared to what we have here. My next trip is to the UK to finish my sleeve but after that, I'm definitely taking a trip to Asia again.

  2. It seems like it was an amazing trip! I would love to visit Japan someday. It makes sense that the majority of travelers are there over the summer, but it is unfortunate given that it when most people would be able to visit. I can't believe how affordable the airbnbs are there! This makes Japan even more inticing as a travel destination. I also like that the Japanese seem to be less reliant on cars than our country. It is great that you can walk places for local journeys, and take the train when you are going further across the country. -Naomi

  3. Hi Arthur,
Traveling to Japan has been one of my biggest dreams since I was a little kid, it is very interesting to see your perspective and what you did while you were there. I have a good friend from home whose family still lives in Japan so if I were to ever go it is comforting knowing I have a place to stay. It really sucks how the pandemic has affected traveling so much and still has a lasting impact on travel restrictions in Japan. Thank you for breaking down a lot of the intricacies of Japan because, after having read this, I feel much more prepared to travel there.

  4. Arthur,
Japan has been somewhere that I have been hoping to travel to for a while now, although of course due to COVID-19 this has been impossible. When I was applying to schools in 2020 for transfer in the 2021 year, one of the schools I had applied was Kyoto University of Engineering, although I got in, I could not afford to go.
I hope to study abroad there at some point, so I appreciate your travel tips, as although I know much about Japan, there is still much I do not know.

  5. Hi Arthur, Japan is definitely a country that it is on my bucket list to travel, I found very interesting all of their culture and as I have many friends that even know the language will definitely make it easier if I go with them, it is great to know about the AirBnb options that there are because as someone going for the first time the normal situation will be to pick up a hotel at the center of the city or something like that when we can rent an airbnb for cheaper and keep going around the city, great post I'll be looking forward into your next one.

  6. Hi Arthur,
I enjoyed reading your blog about your travels to Japan, I have heard so many amazing things. I’m glad that you were able to experience Japan before all the covid-19 restrictions especially since they are currently not permitting tourists. I was wondering why you traveled in the summer since there is a lot more tourist and the weather is hot? Wow the prices for Airbnb are cheap. I liked the video you provided, honestly everything looks so clean, beautiful and peaceful. Thank you for sharing some of the things you did when you were there, visiting Japan is on my to go to list.

  7. Hi Arthur,
I wasn't expecting to be so excited by the travel posts, but I go really excited when I saw your post. I have been wanting to go to Japan for years. I have a friend from there and she's told me so much about it. I really want to plan a "best friend trip". My bff is obsessed with anime and is even learning Japanese! I don't really care for anime personally, but I am really fascinated by the Japanese culture. I want to go and try the food and see all the crazy tourist attractions in addition to the historical/cultural locations. I'm also excited to hear that their main mode of travel is by train.... it must be a great tool to see the island quickly!

  8. Hey Arthur! Just wanted to say that I enjoyed reading your experience traveling to Japan as Japan is definitely on the top of my list to travel and visit. The main reason I would like to go visit Japan is to visit my cousin, Luis, who has been working in Osaka as an English teacher for about 10 years now. Not only for this reason but I would love to explore the culture! I’ve read that there are a lot of Mountain biking trails that are challenging and fun such as the Bashamichi trail in Mount Nagao. The most intriguing part to me as well and I would like to explore is the car culture there, this specifically includes the JDM and Japanese Lowrider scene.
